The Best Landscaping Secrets For Landscaping Small Yards

The process of landscaping - no matter how big or small the project - requires a certain degree of research and planning. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that this applies even more so when it comes to landscaping small yards. The limited space brings its own set of challenges, but it is nothing that you can't handle provided you are a little bit creative and you know a few of the best landscaping secrets for landscaping small yards.

Maybe you are simply updating your yard's exterior appearance or perhaps you want to give it a complete makeover. Landscaping your small yard could be as simple as digging up and replacing a few plants or as difficult as using heavy equipment to remove trees and grade the underlying ground. Landscaping is about appearance and changing that appearance for your own personal satisfaction.

When you know a few of the best landscaping secrets and you have a basic idea in mind for the way you want your landscape to look, you can customize that idea into something that will work with your landscape with the use of one very important term - scale. The largest project can be scaled down to fit the smallest available area with a touch of creativity and imagination.

Knowing exactly what you have to work with includes knowing the terrain of your yard and that includes knowing what your ground is made of. Is your clay like mine - heavy red clay - or is it sandy and loose? Maybe you're one of the lucky ones who has been blessed deep, rich topsoil, but the rest of us normal folks can easily alter what Mother Nature has given us to work with by amending the existing soil with fertilizers, additives and compost.

The biggest thing I want to point out about landscaping small yards is that you should keep the size of your plants in mind. When I refer to size I'm talking about more than just the size it is when you put it in the ground. You also need to understand the potential size of the plant when it grows; otherwise you are going to have a misshapen and overgrown landscape that won't make anyone proud.

When it comes to trees, Japanese maples are a great choice for people with limited space, as they are slow growing and don't get nearly as large as other, more familiar tree varieties. You can also choose plants that are similarly sized. Flowers should remain small, as should bushes, and dwarf varieties of both are readily available in the marketplace today.

Keeping mindful of your space limitations, landscaping small yards doesn't have to be a problem unless you make it one. Pay attention to the small details, and often those details will work your problems out for you. Now get out there and use the best landscaping secrets to make something beautiful!
